Bordeaux, France is known for it famous eight appellations along the Garonne and Dordogne rivers and the numerous other sub-region appellations that beget wines of distinct quality and characteristics to that specific area (for a way of all 57 appellations click here). There are eight famous appellations in Bordeaux, along the left riverbank from north to south you have Saint Estephe, Pauillac, Saint Julien, Margaux, Graves/Pessac-Leognan, and Sauternes and Barsac. On the right bank you have Pomerol and Saint Emilion, and for the sake of this article I will only refer to wines from these eight main appellations and leave the sub-region appellations for you to discover on your own.

While most of Bordeaux produces red grapes a few specific appellations are known for their white grape growing and famous dessert wines. We will mask those appellations that are producing some stellar white wines.

Graves/Pessac-Leognan Appellation – Known for the regions gravelly soils and smoky wines Graves/Pessac-Leognan produced both standout red and white wines.

Chateau Haut-Brion Blanc 2003 – Starting at $782 a bottle this rich harvest styled well balanced white wine is a knock out. Unbelievable honey aromas and peach and apricot flavors dance on the palette and finishes with a nice dry bite.

Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc Pessac-Leognan 2004 – Starting at $55 a bottle this very current and fruit Graves white wine is filled with the flavors of a Bordeaux summer that play out in a complex dance on the palette revealing deeper layers of fruit as each second passes. You must decant this wine for about an hour or the broad nose may not come off as refined.

Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc 2006 – Another fantastic white wine starting at $80 a bottle this one is a tad more sophisticated than the above mentioned wine, full of lemon, herbs and other citrus and berries notes, with warm vanilla and spices making their way through the finish makes this a Bordeaux favorite.

Chateau Carbonnieux Blanc Pessac 2005 – Starting at $40 this steal of a deal has a wonderfully crisp acidic punch off the bat that lead the drinker through its flavor profiles of peach, lemon, and other stone fruits, very refreshing.

Sauternes and Barsac Appellation – Known for the regions decadent dessert wines that are both sophisticated and delicious.

Chateau d’Yquem Sauternes 1990 – Starting at $494 a bottle this is one of the best offerings from the Sauternes Appellation that is under $1000. Exquisite nose of caramel and honey with bright vibrant flavors of tropical fruit and apricot that is resinous and toothsome.

Chateau Suduiraut Sauternes 2005 – Starting at $44 a bottle this is another well balanced dessert wine with a nice caramel and honey nose and flavors of pear and other summer stone fruits, very refreshing, lustrous and well balanced especially for the price.

Chateau Guiraud 2005 – Starting at $38 a bottle another well balanced, extremely fruity dessert wine with a nice finish and acidic punch that comes through the sweetness of this wine.

Chateau la Tour Blanche 2003 – Starting at $57 this is a steal, wonderful complex flavors work in perfection with one another in a chewy body that is rich and satin like. The nose is of honeysuckle and floral, very classic Sauternes white wine for a big trace.

Clos Du Roy 2005 – Starting at $22 a bottle this is a great place to start your adventure into dessert wines, featuring strong flavors, a mixture of pear, citrus and herbs, with a nice long nutty finish that balances the sweetness of this wine.
