Gone are the days when computer files were stored and transferred via “floppy disk.” Now the easy and ubiquitous USB port allows computer users to open their files on virtually any computer. There are a bevy of USB drives to settle from, but I’ve found the Swiss Memory USB to be practical and fun.

Yes, the “Swiss” in the title refers to a Swiss Army Knife, which is included in the USB drive. In fact, the drive is a number of gadgets in one. Besides the USB flash drive and the Swiss Army Knife, the narrow rectangle (it only comes in red) also contains a LED light, a nail file, a miniature pair of scissors and a ballpoint pen. According to the website, there is also a screwdriver, but I have either not used the screwdriver or my model is slightly different.

The flashlight shines fairly radiant and the scissors, though miniscule, really do cut. The downside, though, is the ballpoint pen as the ink literally ran out after one use – but what to expect with such a small pen? The keychain makes it easy to always keep with you, so that your files never leave your side.

Someone remarked to me that the knife part makes the Swiss Memory USB impractical for anyone who travels. I checked the website, and it says that the USB portion can be removed so that users can take it with them on an airplane.

When I bought my USB flash drive, it was only available in 512MB or 256MB, and the latter was enough room for me. Now it is also available in 1GB. There are no extra cords needed, though it came with a microscopic cord you can use if needed (if your USB port is on the back of your computer, for instance, a cord might be easier to connect the USB drive.) It also came with an already-installed program to help organize your files, but I found it easier to bypass it and save directly to the flash drive. I use the USB drive to save writing files, and simply saving the files with clear title names is organized enough for me!

Various websites offer the Swiss Memory USB for between $55 and $99, depending on the storage size. (I bought mine in the mid-range from QVC.) There is a fresh model with an aluminum case instead of red, and from the picture, it looks pretty snazzy. However, there is no flashlight included (and no pen.)

I haven’t ever regretted the purchase, and I’ve never been tempted to buy another USB flash drive. It fits even in my smallest purses!
